Trachy Tapes

Just wondered what type of trachy tapes people use. We used trachi-hold by Kapitex until about 18 months ago when we had an accidental decannulation. Since then we have used Posey ties which are great and fasten at the side rather than the back and are a lot more secure. The problem now is that the small size are getting a bit tight, and the the next size up are massive(too big even for me if I had a trachy!). I've contacted the manufacturers to highlight the sizing problems, but, in the meanwhile, does anyone know of any side fastening trachy tapes? Not too keen on moving to the non-velcro ribbon type, which some people seem to prefer. I realise there is always a greater decannulation risk with the tapes, but then Dominic always has someone with him and is on a sats monitor when he sleeps.

We use the trachi holds now, but have had one accidental decann. Before that we used the cotton twill tapes which come in the box with the trachy tubes. We found these very fiddly to tie, but pretty secure because you double them and do double reef knots. I also know people who use ribbon, which can be pretty you can use nice pink ones with hearts on for instance, for a girl. You just need to make sure it is cotton and not the slippery sort of material usually used. Another suggestion is chains, I know some people who use these too, though it's not something we have tried. Good luck in your search

Hello,

I'm sure we used velcro based ties, of which we used to trim the opposing end to tidy them up.

Josh was denulated 6 years ago now, and my memories fading just as fast as my hair!

Thank you all for your ideas.

Well, after two weeks of research I am no further forward and have found no other suitable ties. Think we may be switching back to Trachi-holds then. A shame, as Posey were lovely and soft too. Poswy haven't replied yet to my email re: sizing, may try and contact them again.

I hadn't even thought of trying to make my own tapes though - could be fun to try and co-ordinate an outfit, socks and trachy tapes!

Hi,

I use cotton tapes, similar to the ones that come in the box with the tubes but on separate reels provided by the hospital. They're a bit fiddly at first but once you get used to them they're great and really secure as use triple knots to hold them in place. This is what GOSH recommended and works so far for us, especially as my baby is only small.

Hi, we use Insight latex free tracheostomy tube holders which are made of velcro and are cut to size.We have found these to be invaluable as our son became allergic to the tapes supplied by the hospital. although they are velcro, they are not that easy to undo, we must have used them for about seven years and (touch wood) have not had an accident with them. Good luck in your search!

Just want to say, that after reading the entry about Insight, I sent them an email enquiry asking for sample tapes, and they telephoned me back within the hour and the next day I had a variety of samples and an offer of more whilst I set up the presciption service.
The tapes are very soft, fully adjustable and the velcro fastening very strong.
