Increased Secretions

Can anyone advise if they noticed a dramatic increase in secretions when their child was teething? Billy is really drolling with his teeth and the hyocine patch doesn't make a scrap of difference. The amount of suction he is having has increased dramatically or at least I think it is down to his teething? I was wondering if anyone who uses the trachphone noses has noticed that they have caused more secretions? Billy does seem to prefer them as they are much smaller for a little toddler with a short neck! Just not sure if they are doing him any good. He requires suctioning about every 10-15 minutes during the day but is really really dry at night. If his nose comes off at night he gets sticky plugs and he has had to have a few emergency tube changes. When he isn't teething suction is normally a couple of times an hour.

Many thanks

Hi Denise,

I have a 9 month old who was trached last October for BVCP. I have experienced the exact same problem with Nadia when she's been teething. Endless streams of secretions during the day and dry at night.

However in the last week she's had hardly any secrestion at all during the day and not been too dry at night, so instead of having to give her a saline neb at least twice in the night I've only had to give her one when she wakes in the morning. Its very frustrating when their patterns keep changing!!

Hi Denise,

I've a 3 year old who has had his trachy since he was 6 weeks old. In the early days he had loads of secretions too, and teething seemed to increase them. We use trachphone HME too, but I've never noticed a difference in the amount of secretions created as a result of it. I like them also as they can be chewed fairly safely without creating sharp bits/ cracking. Be warned - they are a great teething aide!

We were prescribed gylocpyleate (sp???) to reduce secretions. It needs to be used with extreme caution, as it works by drying secretions (yep - increasing risk of blocked tubes!!!). It did work for us though.

Hi Sarah/Laura

As if by magic Billy has only been suctioned about 10 times in total today, although he still has loads of drolling going on!

He has the hyocine patch instead of the glyocpyleate (again sp??) as it did not work for Billy at all. The patches seem to work some days (like today) then others seem to have no effect. Can't win can you :-) I'm glad you said the Trachphone don't cause extra sectreations as I much prefer them to any onther HME. I'll keep on going with them.

Many thanks

Denise
