Hi there
Has anyone noticed that after a Bronchoscopy that there child gets a chest infection almost immediatley or several increased secretions? Billy has a scope in September and as soon as he came out of theatre he had full blown chest infection resulting in spending almost 2 weeks in hospital requiring oxygen. I just put it down to being a coincidence until yesterday....he had enough scope and as soon as he came back from theatre his secretions were continuous. I hadn't suctioned all day, he went into theatre at 3 pm but when he came out it was every couple of minutes. He has been the same today, although he doesn't appear to be ill i.e. no temperature etc but lots of very green secretions. I've tried nebbing him but to no avail.
Many thanks
Denise

Sam has usually been pretty junky with increased secretions following a bronchoscopy, I think that is due to the irritation to the airway. Only once has it turned into anything nasty (which we think was probably present before). usually he is ok after a couple of days. I hope this is the case for you this time.
Hi,
It is ineevitable that there will be increased secretions immediately after paediatric bronchoscopy, however, if the secretions are green its the antibiotics again I am afraid.
Hope things get resolved quickly.
Best wishes
June
Hi Denise,
We have always had the opposite problem, a bronch really dries Dominic up due to the Altrapin (spelling?) they give to dry the secretions so they can view the airway better during the bronch. We nearly always need direct tracheal humidity, and so often end up having to overnight.
Could just be an unfotunate coincidence, as children with tracheostomies are so prone to infections. I think we may also have been given precautionary augmentin after a bronch too, but not every time.
Green secretions may mean you need antibiotics, so I'd get a secretion sample done asap if not already.

Luis does tend to get increased secretions following a scope due to the irritation, but it's never resulted in any infection so far and tends to settle down after a couple of days.
He has picked up a chest infection after a stay in hospital though, which I think is just par for the course. He's like a bug magnet!
Luis is due a scope on 5th June so I will let you know how he reacts following that...

the first MLB emily had as an outpatient left her really unwell and in hospital - horrible breathing etc. her ENT dr said it wasn't the MLB that would have caused it but i think it was.
her secretions are always loosened up and take ages to come out, too. plus sometimes a bit of blood. our GP said he thinks it can cause localised infection.
